The B-Hive 2015 briefs were for Odyssey, a hotel chain providing adventure holidays whilst maintaining the highest level of luxury. I submitted work for both the Graphic Design and Digital categories, which led me to be shortlisted to present in front of industry creatives for the chance to win placements. I went on to win 7 weeks of paid work at four different Midland agencies.
The Graphic Design brief required 'Odyssey' to be branded, with a full suite of brand collateral. My solution was to focus on the adventure aspect - combining navigation and technology by fusing the O of Odyssey with a 'digital' compass arrow. Luxury is a subjective characteristic; it has a different 'meaning' to each person, so I decided to convey it as modernism, innovation and minimalism through my clean, minimal design style. I named the chain 'Hotel Odyssey' as I felt it carried a strong luxurious link, with a line that conveys innovation through pioneering.
My aim for the brand collateral was for it to totally suite the brand and most importantly be useful to the guest, therefore, I created a 'Welcome Pack' which would be given to guests when they check in. Packs would be location specific, e.g. Hotel Odyssey Brazil. The pack includes a 'Contact Card', with important information such as phone numbers and addresses, travel guides & maps, pocket language phrases, menus and much more. One final piece of the pack is the 'Room Guide' - featuring a live compass and a set of 'instructions' leading to your room.
The Welcome Pack also contains 'digital' elements, specific to each guest's requirements and features. When someone books a holiday at the hotel, they will be contacted regarding their overall personal preferences. In this, guests can note what 'devices' they are bringing, such as phones, tablets and computers. The idea is that guests can have personalised phone/device cases, which are the first link into my digital platform idea for Hotel Odyssey.
Example device cases can be seen above, boasting the hotel branding whilst maintaining extremely high levels of protection & durability. Each guest would also receive the hotel WiFi Dongle with their Welcome Pack which would enable connectivity 24/7, wherever they are, in or out of the hotel. The main objective of the dongle is to enable functionality within the hotel app.
All hotel locations are digitally driven environments with a clear passion for technology. The My Odyssey app is the digital platform for guests at Hotel Odyssey, offering numerous functions that can assist, amplify and improve any adventure. The navigation takes inspiration from a compass, taking the user on a unique journey/experience each time they use the app.
In addition to the unique functionality of the app, My Odyssey holds a great deal of content for guests to engage with to make their experience more memorable and personal. The signature section, My Odyssey, enables the user to document their entire journey, without any input. The dongle enables connectivity 24/7, which allows the app to use location services to create personalised maps, journeys and touchpoints, compile detailed information about photos, gather individual statistics and much more. My Odyssey populates the user’s journey in one single place, giving them the opportunity to look back at their adventure at any time.
My Odyssey content is visible to the user during their experience, but when the journey is complete and the guest is back home, they can create a unique, highly personalised printed journal, documenting the entire trip, through photos, stats, facts, routes, images and more.
Technology would be utilised throughout the brand, such as developing a service that allows the user’s device to combine with the hotel app to serve as a room key. A small, hidden sensor in the phone case would pair with the device’s location services to allow the phone to 'recognise' when it is ‘home’, which would create a greater ease of access for the user.
